Asphalt Quality Support Your Quality ... Assured

Our partner in South Wales had a large steel slag crushing and screening process to produce aggregates for use in their asphalt plants. The task was contracted out to a third party. The costs were high and the quality poor. We advised and assisted in bringing the process in house. Our involvement included selection of appropriate crushing and screening equipment and monitoring the outputs to achieve high quality recycled aggregate, This resulted in cost reduction to the business

Our Partner in Lancashire had commenced building a plant but had very little operational or technical experience within the business. We were brought in to commission the plant both operationally and technically, including training and coaching of employees with no experience of asphalt manufacturing. Our involvement with stakeholders and service providers was key in the process. Within 6 weeks the plant was operational and manufacturing high quality asphalt containing recycled material.  Within 20 weeks they were ISO 9001 accredited to produce asphalt and gained CPR accreditation in December 2025. Our involvement at every stage including third party audits have been a key influence in this project. We continue to give technical support on a regular basis. This includes us developing and launching own brand proprietary products on their behalf.

Our client in South Yorkshire had a long running material complaint with a potential  cost liability exceeding £100k.We undertook an extensive complaint investigation that proved there was minimal liability to the material supplier. This was achieved by scrutinising all aspects of the complaint using root cause analysis. A detailed reported was submitted to the complainants ( a local authority and a surfacing contractor) and the findings were accepted.

Another client had laid 150 tonnes of material on a new build housing site that had quickly failed. The material supplier had visited the site and claimed the site conditions were the root cause. AQS undertook a deep dive investigation into the supplier manufacturing records and  CE / Declaration of Performance data, discovering issues and anomalies that conclusively proved the majority of the liability lay with the product.

Carbon Reduction and ultimately Net Zero are no longer just a nice to have. They are key to the success of any business involved in the manufacture of construction materials. This is especially the case in the two highest producers of carbon, namely asphalt and concrete. As well as being involved in the use of recycled aggregates and asphalt (RAP) into concrete and asphalt respectively, we have lots of experience reducing the carbon footprint of asphalt products. Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA), recycled plastic, bitumen replacements, recycled paper, recycled tyres, pure carbon and even recycled bank notes  are just some of the materials we have successfully included in asphalt products. Our extensive range of industry contacts means we are one of the first to hear about new emerging sustainable  products keeping our clients ahead of the game. Allied to this our partners include test houses who can confirm the performance characteristics of the materials we  trial. All our work is actual, not theoretical. An established asphalt manufacturer and surfacing contractor needed to implement  a robust Quality Plan to confirm compliance with FPC, enabling enhanced market access.  AQS were brought in to conduct an extensive business review and audit, and advise on existing findings of a preliminary audit undertaken by BSI some months previous.  AQS who have good working relationships with the key accredited organisations in the UK were able to revise the scheduled audit plan with BSI, allowing time for a system  to be developed and implemented by AQS for our client. We expect to achieve CPR accreditation once the Quality Plan is written and implemented within a short timescale. Following this AQS will continue with technical support for the business on a regular basis to ensure ongoing compliance.

A sand dredging company had commenced supplying its fine aggregate to mainline concrete manufacturers who were asking for proof of Factory Production Control procedures, Declaration of Performance and CE certification. AQS conducted a preliminary operations audit and put an action plan in place. This included writing a Quality Plan to comply with FPC for aggregates, completion of DoP and type testing and review of the data held to ensure compliance with BS EN 12620 Aggregates for Concrete. Liaising with the clients customers and their BSI auditors we ensured their technical requirements were met. We also trained the staff to carrying out gradings in the on site laboratory.
